The 1st Waling Challenge "Tawid -Taal"

  1. Rules
  2. The series will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing, the Prescriptions of the Taal Lake Yacht Club, the appropriate class rules, the Notice of Race and these Sailing Instructions. These Sailing Instructions take precedence over the Taal Lake Sailing Instructions in the case of any conflict.

  3. Eligibility

Event eligibility is restricted to Hobie 16 Beach catamarans complying with class rules. The fleet may be divided into A and B Divisions at the Committee’s discretion.

If sufficient entries are received an open beach catamaran handicap division may be run.

3. Notice to Competitors

Notices to competitors will be posted on the official Taal Lake Yacht Club notice board

4. Changes to Sailing Instructions

Any changes to the Sailing Instructions affecting the schedule of races will be posted on the Official Notice Board before 2000 hrs on the day before it will take effect. Any other changes will be posted on the Official Notice Board 1 hour before the start of the first race each day.

    * Start sequence for these races begins no sooner than 5 minutes after the last boat finishes except following the first race to finish after 12:00 hrs. on Sunday, there will be a 45 minutes lunch period before the next warning signal

     

    For Race 3 all helmsmen will switch position with their respective crew. Race 3 will not be included in the National Championship Series of Races but will be included in the 1st. Waling Challenge Results.

  3. Signals made Ashore
  4. Code Flag "AP" on shore with 2 sound signals (one when lowering) means race postponed.

    The warning signal will be made not less than 1 minute after the "AP" is lowered.

    Code Flag "AP" will be flown between races.

  5. Class Flag
  6. The Hobie 16 Class flag will be a white flag

  7. Race Area
  8. The Club’s normal race area will be extended to include the waters adjacent to and to the South East of the Lake. See posted diagrams.

  11. Marks
  12. Relative locations of marks are shown on the posted diagrams.

    A "gate" is formed by the outer distance mark (ODM) and the inner distance mark (IDM) in the start location. Boats are to pass between them when required by the above courses.

     

  13. The Start
  14. The Start will be in accordance with RRS 26 (5-4-1-0 sequence)

    The Starting and Finishing Line will be between the orange flag flown on the Club flag pole (or Committee Boat) and the ODM at the Club or a nearby buoy at other locations.

    If an inner distance mark (IDM) is laid, boats will pass between the outer (ODM) and inner (IDM) distance mark when approaching the line to start or starting.

  16. Start and Finish locations will be as follows :

    Start A/Finish A. The vicinity of the club property.

    Start B/Finish B. In front of a grotto and a cross at Calumayin, Batangas.

    Approximately 164° from TLYC.

    Sailors are warned to exercise extreme caution in parking their boats at finish line B because of rocks that can damage your boats. (To be explained further during the skippers briefing.

  19. Scoring
  20. The low point scoring system will apply (RRS Appendix A).

    For the National Championships if seven or more races are sailed boats will discard their worst score. If six or less races are completed there will be no discards.

    Ties will be resulted in accordance with (RRS Appendix A).

    For the Waling Challenge, races 2, 3 and 4 will count with no discard.

  21. Safety
  22. No boat shall rank as a starter unless all persons aboard are wearing adequate flotation aids.

  23. Minimum Crew weights
  24. A combined minimum crew weight of 285 lbs (129.3 kg) will be strictly enforced. Helms and crews will be weighed at registration on Saturday January 12th from 0800hrs. at the registration hut of TLYC. Competitors will be expected to provide their own weight correctors, and must be weighed in with appropriate weights before commencing to race. The weights must then be securely attached to the boat and must not be carried or worn by the crew.

  25. Alterations to Racing Rules/Penalties
    1. IHCA 360 Degree Rule: A boat that may have broken a rule of Part 2 while racing may take a penalty at the time of the incident. Her penalty shall be one 360-degree turn penalty.
    2. The team that scores last place over-all in the A Fleet and 1st place over-all in the B Fleet on Day 1 of the series shall buy at his own expense a case of beer to be consumed during the cocktails.
    3. At its discretion the Protest Committee may award an alternative penalty to disqualification for breaches of RRS Part 2 only.

  26. Assistance
  27. Any boat receiving hands on assistance from rescue or chase boats will be scored DNF. The Race Committee may decide when a boat needs assistance.

  28. Prizes

Prizes for overall 1st, 2nd and 3rd will be awarded for Hobie 16 A Fleet and B Fleet and for the Walling Challenge. Additional prizes may be awarded.
