Buena Vista 2007
Round Taal Volcano Regatta
and Governor's Cup

Good winds, on 3 separate race courses, blessed this years "Buena Vista Round Taal Volcano Regatta".

GOVERNOR'S CUP
The well planned Buena Vista Country Club, and Taal View Heights Subdivision, stood out as landmarks to the  2 divisions of boats which started the race to, and  around, Taal Volcano. This first race of the regatta, known as the "Governors Cup", left Taal Lake Yacht Club at 11am Saturday, Nov 17, 2007.

The Hobie teams raced around Taal Volcano in record time, as the Homebuilt teams, and Adult Singlehanded Dinghies, sailed to Bubuin island, and back to TLYC.

Course 1- HOBIES
The Hobie fleet of 18 boats, raced downwind to the eastern tip of volcano island, and enterd the 4 km long "fishcage alley".  They negotiated their way  through around ten thousand unregistered fishcages that are causing  the extinction of the world famous tawilis, and maliputo. These are freshwater species of sardine, and oceanic Jack,  found only in the Philippines, and only in Taal Lake.

At the end of this 5 km stretch of mostly foreign financed pens,  which are already destroying the environment and  livelihood of the truly local residents, The Hobies came to the southwestern tip of the island. At this corner, they would begin the heavy  upwind battles that would separate the "good" from the "just lucky today".

After the big waves and strong winds on the southern side of the island, they reached Bubuin island, supposedly a fish sanctuary. Again, the racers had to avoid more illegal pens, which have so far, operated with impunity.

With the wind coming from the side, instead of the front, the boats reached their maximum speeds of 35 kph, for the final blast to the finish line. Team Maldita, of  Charlie Clement and Norman Jaravata finished in a new record time of only 2 hrs 22 minutes and 40 seconds.

Course 2- Homebuilts and Dinghies

The "Homebuilt" and "Adult Dinghy" classes started the race after the Hobies, but instead of going aound Volcano Island, they raced to Bubuin island, off the eastern tip of Volcano Island, and back again.

The Streaker class boats, led by their builder, Ed Umali,  were generally crewed by more experienced racers, and the 16 foot dinghies. They took the lead in the dinghy division from the start gun, and held it all the way to the finish.

The Homebuilt boats were an odd, but truly lovable combination of "low budget boats built in a day" to "finely finished romantic craft".

This year the wind was too strong for the relatively new sailors in the "built in a day" boats. Though never in danger of actually sinking, because the hulls, were adequqtely strong, it was the "rigging" that posed the problems.
These "carpenters learning to sail", learned a lot about stresses on equipment, and the suitability of specific types of material for certain uses.

As could be expected, the homebuilders with more experience, both building boats, and sailing them, ruled the division.

Course 3- OPTIMISTS
There was a third racecourse on day 1.
The optimist class boat, is the largest class in the world, with  over 300,000 boats registered.
The class was started in 1965 by parents who built the squarish bathtubs in their garages over the winter months, with the optimistic hope that their children would learn to sail them in the summer.

The class racing is limited to children 16 and below, and the competition is fierce.

This is the first year that the "optis" were included in TLYC's largest annual regatta.  The club is extremely grateful to Paul Symes, for supporting this class, which  is considered the most important entry level boat for children who are the sport's future leaders.

The optimists did not sail aross to the volcano,  but instead, raced on the standard competition "round the buoys" race course in front of TLYC. They completed 5 races on Sturday,  with the objective of getting in a total of 8 races for the weekend.

PARTY!

As always, the RTV party was one of the club's best. Buena Vista's catering service prepared a sumptuous dinner buffet, that was served on the lawn.

The RTV draws our friends from all over,  France, Cebu, as well as the regulars, who all expect, and get, a good time.

For the awards, the party transferred into the Capotosto residence. The kids recieved aawrds, as well as the Governors cup winners, sa friends and other contestants, and other winners cheered them on.

GOVERNOR'S CUP RESULTS

As it transpired,  it was also Jorn's Birthday, so as if these festivities werent enough, out came another box of Champagne, and the party flowed on waaay into the early morning hours

DAY 2
It was just as windy as Day 1,  and with no signs of wear and tear from the night before, the fleets were again out in full force to finish the last races of the regatta.
