Answer to our most frequently asked questions:
1)"How much does it
cost?"
- Around P2000/ student/5 hr. day for a small group of
2 beginners.
- Generally, the price goes down, a bit, per person, as the group
size increases.
- the stronger the wind is, the more safety personel and instructors will
be needed to ensure safety, so pricing can go up when its windy.
- the more lectures and sailing time a student has attended, the less instruction
the student(s) will need, so eventually, it just becomes a question of monitoring.
2)"How
long does it take?"
Sailing is one of those sports where you get better and better, and theres
always more to learn, but you can learn the basic theory in a couple of hours,
and sail a boat back and forth from shore, with the instructor monitoring
your safety, in a day.
3)"Do I need lessons?"
If you think you know how to sail,
but you are not completely sure that you can handle our boats (especially
the Hobie 16), we strongly suggest that you take lessons. It is better than
just renting a boat, and having to pay to get rescued!.
TLYC has an ongoing
sailing program for all levels, and all ages.
For children 12 and below, please call Paul Symes.
Paul is a New Zealand certified instructor and coach, with a 10 year old
daughter who competes regularly on the International circuit. Training is
done exclusively in optimist class dinghy sailboats.
Paul is based in Manila, but teaches on weekends at TLYC. you will need to
ask him about rates.

For older kids and adults, the
TLYC Manager, Joe Hagedorn, teaches small classes, and gives individual instruction.
Instruction is given at the basic level or Intermediate level.
We recognize that most of our students are young professionals,
and as such, they have a lot of commitments.
So, classes are given when the student is free, rather than
when WE are free.
Instruction is given one on one, or in small groups.

COST: We apoligize if the rates below seem complicated
initially, but this is really the fairest system to both the instructors,
and the students.
-We divide the charges into 3 categories, Instructor time, Monitoring
time, and cost of boat rentals.
-Using our system of charges, it is esay to come up with the cost for any
size of group.
Rates are:
-P400 per hour, per senior instructor
-P200 an hour for junior instructors, for "actual instruction"
- P100 for "monitoring".
You will also be charged for "boat rental if required."
The "terms used" are explained below.
ACTUAL INSTRUCTION
-Lectures and debriefings are charged as "actual instruction" time. Whether
the instructor is lecturing one person, or 6 people, the cost is the same.
If we charge per student, its unfair to the students.
-Instructor "time on the water", is the time the instructor spends on a
boat, be it on the same boat with the student, or if he/she is on another
boat.
MONITORING
Most training is practice, that can be done without an instructor beside
the student. However, the sudent cannot be left completely alone, so each
needs to be monitored, either from shore, or from another boat.
Instead of the P400/hr "actual instruction" fee, we only charge P100/hr/student
for "monitoring".
BOAT RENTAL IF REQUIRED.
Some students have friends boats, or their own boats, to learn on, so it
would be unfair for us to charge them for boats.
Other students, especially most beginners, are more suited to learn on the
less expensive "topper" boats than the Hobies. Others want to learn
on the Hobies right away.
so, right away, it is easy to see that the cost of boats used by the students
can vary. Depending on the desires of the students.
Further, depending on the class size, the strength of the wind, the ability
of the student, and the value of the students time, the instructor
may need his own boat to teach from. If possible, you should try to schedule your classes on
weekdays, or Saturdays. Sundays are the most popular, therefore, the least
desirable!

Accomodations:
We are "Manila's best daytrip
destination". Using the Santa Rosa road to Tagaytay from South Super
hwy, and then Ligaya drive, down to the lake, Makati to TLYC is an hour and
a half (allocating Makati to Alabang as 30 mins). 95% of people come
for the day.
There is accomodation all around
TLYC, and you can pick and choose the places you'd like. Typically, rates
are around P1500/night as of this writing. Plus we have camping
RESERVATIONS
AND SCHEDULING As of this writing, reservations are now coordinated directly
thru the instructor, Joe Hagedorn: 0917-8950430 .
The Makati office (Peter Capotosto 8113183/3283) can still give basic info
and updates, but it takes longer to coordinate because the Makati office
still has to contact Talisay, and then get back to you.
Weather
Do not base your judgement of what the weather is (particularly
rain) on Manila weather. Very often, the nicest days at TLYC are when its
raining in Manila!!
You can get good advance weather prediction information
from Peter Capotosto at 09178383726.

Other Sailing Lessons
Intro to Speed
is a special group program. We
take up to 6 people out on the Hobie 21 Sport Cruiser for the day, and teach
everyone on board the basics of sailing. everybody gets to drive the boat
and handle the sails. On very windy days, this is the only class we offer
because the instructor is on the boat, instead of directing students from
another boat following behind. Price is P4200/day
regardless of the number of students.
Intro to Speed
P4200 per day.
